Swedish massage, also known as Western or classic style of massage, is a scientific
system of manipulations on the muscles and Connective Tissue, or the Soft Tissues, of the body for the purpose of relaxation,
rehabilitation or health maintenance. This modality was developed in the 1820’s by the Swedish Doctor, Per Henrik
Ling. His techniques were brought from various places in the world including Greece, Rome, China and Egypt.
Swedish massage therapy is probably the most popular and familiar massage system being practiced today and has served as a
foundation for many of the massage techniques, which have developed over recent years. Swedish massage is comprised
of five basic strokes and their variations:
• Effleurage
• Petrissage • Friction • Tapotement
(or percussion) • Vibration
